ExCo Custom Homes designs and builds custom homes in Boone, Blowing Rock and the rest of Watauga County. We’ve worked across the High Country, from Boone to an A-frame in Seven Devils, and we plan every home around what a mountain lot asks for before the first board goes up. Our office is on Main Street in North Wilkesboro, about 45 minutes down US-421 from Boone.
Our work in the High Country
- Boone: The Foxtrot, a twin-gable home underway in Raven Rock Meadows, laid out as two matching living wings
- Blowing Rock: The Hemlock at Lost Creek, a mountain-modern home underway now, with heavy stone masonry and a layered gable roofline
- Seven Devils: Maple Hollow, a 2,500 sq ft A-frame with a two-story wall of glass facing the Blue Ridge
- Todd: Echo Pines, a cabin on an 18-foot foundation that follows the slope, and Solitude Vista, with a deck 30 feet above the ground
What it costs to build a custom home in Boone
Homes typically start at $350 per square foot and up. At that price, a home often includes typical site work, septic and a well: clearing the home site, a driveway under 100 feet, drainage, and a well up to 500 feet deep. Where a home lands above that depends mostly on the site and the finishes: a long or steep driveway, retaining walls, a walkout foundation, stone, timber and big glass all add up.
Plan separately for:
- The land
- Site work beyond the typical: a longer driveway, retaining walls or heavy rock
- A well deeper than 500 feet, priced by the foot
- The design agreement
We price the home from finished drawings, so you get one fixed price before construction starts, with allowances for anything you haven’t picked yet. For more on what drives the number, see what building a mountain home in NC really costs.
What’s different about building in Boone and Blowing Rock
- Steep lots. Most High Country lots slope, and some slope hard. Where the house sits, how the driveway climbs, and whether you get a crawl space, a walkout basement or a tall foundation all get settled on the site walk, before design starts. More on building on a steep lot.
- Neighborhood rules. Many High Country communities have an HOA or architectural review committee that has to approve your design. We build their review into the schedule.
- Views and the Parkway. Lots near the Blue Ridge Parkway can come with view and setback rules.
- Well and septic. Most lots outside town limits need a well and a septic permit, and the septic area affects where the house can go.
- Weather. Winters are longer at elevation. We plan the schedule around the season so you get a realistic timeline from the start.
Building while you live somewhere else
Most of our High Country clients live out of town while their home is built. You get one project manager who runs your job from start to finish, weekly photo and video updates, and a team that’s here when you can’t be.
How we build
- Site walk. We walk your lot with you before anything is drawn, and we survey it ourselves.
- Design agreement. Our in-house design team draws your home under a paid design agreement, detailed enough to price accurately. Already have an architect’s plans? We build from outside plans too.
- Fixed-price contract. When the design is done, you get a fixed price built from those drawings, with allowances for anything you haven’t picked yet.
- Construction. One project manager runs your job, and every ExCo job is reviewed in our weekly production meeting.
- After move-in. We come back for walkthroughs at 6, 12 and 24 months, and your home carries a 1-2-10 StrucSure warranty.
